The FTC just issued refunds to Fortnite players that total over 126 million dollars. Here’s how to see if you qualify.
Epic Games Had to pay over $500 Million in Damages
Back in 2023 the FTC won a case against Epic Games after so many children playing had either accidentally spent hundreds of dollars on in game currency, or they just unknowingly purchased things while playing. The court ruled that the company had both violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and used what it referred to as “dark patterns” to trick Fortnite players into making unwanted purchases. Epic had to pay back $275 million just for violating COPPA and an additional $245 million. Maybe there’s a valid reason everyone has beef with Epic Games. Looking at you, Apple.
FTC Extends Deadline to Claim Refund Checks
Players saw the first wave of these refunds back in December and saw 630k checked be sent out. The second larger wave, featuring $126 million, was due to be sent to almost 970k people this week. However, the FTC decided to extend the deadline to sign up for these refunds though till July 9 in order for anyone who is still trying to get that bag but maybe forgot.
