YouTube is Adding Free to Use AI Features

YouTube AI Feature Update

YouTube is rolling out more AI features to non-premium members that you may just find really useful. Here’s what you need to know.

YouTube has more to offer than Veo 3

Earlier this week YouTube CEO mentioned that VEO 3 is coming to YouTube Shorts after the company celebrated over 200 billion views from it’s shorts this year. While that feature is a bit of a sore spot since it can cause more harm than good, the company also announced two new AI features which have potential to help your productivity.

YouTube is going all in on AI

YouTube AI Carousel Overviews

One of these AI features is a search carousel which, if it looks familiar it’s because it took a page straight from Gemini’s Overviews. You can use the tool to search for things like “Best hiking spots in Washington” and it will provide you with a summary and suggested videos for parks around the area as well as related content to get you prepared for the next hike.

It’s neat and honestly super helpful for the searcher. The real pain point from tools like this are the creators since it comes at the cost of engagement. We’ve spent decades now trying to convince you why to watch videos all the way through whereas as now YouTube will cut to a snippet that’s most relevant to your question and forget the rest.

Conversational AI to Help with Studying

On the other side of the red button, we have a conversational AI button which will live on the menu bar of each video you watch which will open a chatbot up to ask questions pertaining to the current video. YouTube says you can get more info on the topic of the video, find similar content and even have the AI tool quiz you on some key concepts.

That last one is more for learning/academic videos but hey, as a boy with ADHD maybe a little quiz in between videos I’ve just watched can keep me from dissociating as much. The initial rollout of this feature was back in 2023, but it’s been slowly beefing up and will be rolling out to non-premium users sometime this week according to Google.
